IPA Character Map for Windows

Version 1.0 by Kobi Reiter

Idea copied from (superior) Mac implementation by Brian S. ‘Moses’ Hall:

This program allows you to enter Unicode IPA characters from a list organized following the IPA chart.

Installing the program:

Download a zip file containing the executable: IPACharmap. You're ready to use it!

Possible problems:

When running the .exe file, you may get the following error message:

Go to the Microsoft website http://www.microsoft.com/downloads and search for the “Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package” (also directly accessible here). Download and install this package to your machine.

The program is written to use the font Gentium from SIL. It will work with any Unicode font (such as Lucida Sans Unicode, which comes with Windows). You can change the font as you wish when you run the program, but you must use a Unicode font for the characters to display properly. Visit the SIL website to download unicode fonts supporting IPA such as Gentium, Charis SIL, or Doulos SIL.

Open the program. Click on the IPA symbols you would like to use. The symbols are shown at the bottom of the window. When you have written a word of sentence, the copy button at the bottom right corner of the window allows to you copy your IPA transcription. You can then paste that transcription into your favorite word processing program.
